Back tire(s) spin, grinding/crunching noise up front around diff
2013 F150 King Ranch 4x4 with around 94K
I have an issue that I've been after since January 2016 (yes, you read that right), and I need help!
Almost every time I loose traction with my rear tire(s), I notice a grinding noise that sounds like it is coming from within something hollow. My guess that "hollow" source is a case, or the differential. Nonetheless, the sound is coming from right around the front differential area, or driver's side axles, etc.
I live on a ranch, so drudging through mud and traversing hills that cause back tire(s) to spin is very, very common. The grinding noise is not dependent on how much gas I am giving the truck. If the back tire(s) spin, it makes the noise. It does so in 4x2, 4x4, but mostly in 4x2.
This truck has been at 3 different deals, but none have been able to figure this out. They've heard the noise, but cannot seem to pinpoint what it could be. One field engineer guessed that the issue was/is an axle, but apparently no one is confident enough to replace the axle at Ford's cost (the truck is under an extended plan). The truck has a roughness that you can feel under your butt, gas pedal, and up through the steering column to the steering wheel. To me, it feels like a bearing is going out.
Anyone have any ideas on what could be griding up in the front area when the back tire(s) are spinning? The passenger's side IWE has been replaced. Driver's wheel hub has been replaced. The rack and pinion was replaced (the truck had a crazy wander to it, and a dealer thought that might fix things up). The front differential has had fluids changed (I was told the fluid looked like crap. I thought this was interesting considering the truck had about 76K on it when this issue started).
Thanks to everyone who helps in advance!
