Unhappy Noisy Power Steering

Searched all forums and found nothing on this: when I'm moving slow, like in a parking lot, and turn left I hear noise(slight whine) from the power steering unit and nothing when I turn right. Am I the only one with this? Fluid is fine, what else could it be?

i know my truck is much older than yours but mine does the same thing. ive showed it to a few mechanics and they told me its normal, nothing to worry about. since yours is newer, i dont know if its normal like mine, but i dont think it should be anything to worry about. hope this helps

Thumbs up

I have a 2001 Ford Lightning and have a slight bubbling or shooshing noise when turning either left or right. After much research I have determined it is a natural condition of Ford Power Steering. Apparently they use a corregated not a smooth power steering line that tends to create noise when the fluid is rushing through it. I have talked to numerous people and mechanics and everybody says it is nothing to worry about.

For what it's worth, I have owned my '01 SCREW for 3 weeks now and have noticed the same whine when turning either left or right.

Mobil 1 Synth ATF in mine - and it's noticeable quieter. Worth the 5 mins it takes to replace it - i used about 1/2 a quart, as i was not able to get 'all' the oem stuff out. I figure i'll flush it again a couple times and that should suffice.

I think what your talking about is you hear a loud skreech at low speeds when turning. and there is plenty of search info on this but i will tell you what I did. Ford didnt put grease inserts in the joints of the turning bars. sorry if I dont know the right names but I am sure you get the jist. anyways there is one that have a rubber seat around it and it is suppose to have grease in it but over time it wears out so instead of replaceing since I am in college I did what any shadetree machenic would do cut a small hole in it and used a sureng to inject some gear oil into it. The sound went away almost right then when turning the wheels. Thats was over a year ago almost and it has not done the noise agian. Hope this helps you.

been there done that

Had mine at the dealers and they replaced the power steering unit, pitman arm, serpintine belt, and it makes the same noise. Of coarse there was no charge for the above items but the noise remains and it is irritating as hell

A "fluidy" sound, sorta like water moving through cheap plumbing and fixtures, is normal. A somewhat high pitched moaning or grinding sound is not normal.

If it makes a sound when turning the wheel one way and not the other, to me, that's suspect. Makes me wonder if there's either a problem with the steering box or one of the linkages is binding in one direction and not the other.
