Rear end gear?

I have a 2001 screw 4x4 with the 5.4 and auto transmission. I don't know what transmission or gears I have but would like to how do I find out? Also do I have ls in the rear end? All I know is it pulls like crazy offroad and when I power brake it or get on it both tires spin. Please help me identify this stuff because I'm going with 295 70 17 tires and I hope I won't have to change gears. I have a 285 70 17 now with no issues

There is a tag on the drivers door that gives the axle code. That code tells what it came with from the factory. There is usually a tag attached to the rear pumpkin that has the gears on it. However, it's possible the gears have been changed if you are not the original owner. There is not enough difference in those two tire sizes to make a big difference.

The door jamb sticker has both AXLE and TRANS codes. The VIN won't give you this info.

You most likely have trans U which is a 4R70W, and axle H9 which is 3.55 LS.

The difference between 285 and 295 is negligible.

Thanks. Is the limited slip as good as a locker? Or would a locker decrease my gas mileage. My wife already fuses because I only get 12 mpg now. If I step up to the 295 will I notice a difference in the look of the truck or will it be the same?
