2006 4x4 not engaging

2006 4x4 not engaging
Hi
I have a 2006 f-150 4x4. manual shift for the transfer case. It shifts in smooth to Hi-Lo range. I can feel and hear the gears meshing together. But 4wheel does not work. Tried backing up a little then back to forward. nothing. Drove down the road a ways with the 4-wheel. Nothing. Im at loss and not sure what to start looking at.
Any help would be great
