1999 Expedition grinding, transfer case or front end?

I have a 1999 Expedition with about 160K miles. For a while now it seems to grind while driving. All fluids are good. The grinding seems to be worse when turning in a tight radius. If memory serves me correctly it has always done this when locked in 4hi, but it seems to be doing it more often in the A4X4 or automatic 4x4. We do not hear it much as we live on a farm and it does mostly gravel driving, but today the wife is in the city and complaining that it is going to explode. I thought I had the answer and was all exited when I read the thread on the IWE, but that seems to be 2004 and newer.

The sound is not a light grinding noise, but something bad enough that it vibrates the rig when doing it. Somebody please help.

Michael

Sounds like the wheel, U-joints. Remove front driveshaft, lock it in and drive it to test.

Could be bad front bearings.
