4wd use

As this is my first 4WD F150 I have what might be a stupid question...everyone I talk to says to engage the 4WD every so often, don't leave it for too long or I might find it doesn't work when I want it. In the winter no prob, every couple of weeks I could find enough snow or ice to lock em in and go. Now that its almost summer time whats the best procedure... I'm pretty much a city guy who's truck is driven mostly on sunny days, should I shift into 4wd in the rain once in while just to ensure all is well? I have heard differing opinions so please set me straight.

You can drive in 4wd on dry pavement at low speeds for a block or so in a straight line with no issues.

I 'exercise' my 4wd system from time to time on pavement going straight.. On my commute, I encounter traffic most of the time to the point of where it's stop and go at best...

On the long, straight stretches, I'll pop it into 4wd and roll along for awhile. If the speed picks up I'll switch back, but I've gone to 40+ mph, going straight many times and I think it just helps keep all the 'gizmos' that are used to engage the system working and all..

It's just what I do... To date, never had an issue of binding or it not going into 4wd when needed..

Thanks for the replies guys. I'm gonna take some of this good advice and engage it as suggested. Already probably been couple of months since I engaged the 4WD, not gonna wait any longer.
