Did I trash the transfer case? 1985 F150 4x4 Automatic

Hi,
I was reading through some posts trying to find info and can't really find anything like my situation.
Here is the deal: I borrowed the truck and a trailer from a friend. I used the 4x4 to get up our steep driveway and when I got back on hard top road I disengaged the 4x4 according to the instructions on the visor. The truck is a automatic transmission but it has a stick to shift into 4HI. It has manual locking hubs. So to disengage I shifted into 2 and then got out and spun the hubs to "free". The instructions did not say to back up so I did not. I went down the road and the truck felt like it was running rough. When I got up to 35mph there was a horrible sound and I thought that the entire transmission had fallen out of the truck. The 4x4 stick jumped all over the place. I pulled over to look for the tranny and everything seemed fine. I could not figure it out so off I went and now the truck felt absolutely fine. I had no more problems until I was dropping off the truck when I decided to try the 4x4 again to see if it still worked (after the terrible noise and all). I engaged it and locked the hubs and drove forward. The truck started making a metal on metal sound so I took it out of 4 wheel drive.
Sorry for the long post...my question is do you think that I some how trashed the transfer case? Do you think that it is the transfer case? Should I have backed up when disengaging the 4x4? The shifting into 4 wheel drive was a bit stiff so do you think it is possible that it did not fully disengage? The 4x4 light on the dash was off though. My friend is not home yet so I have not spoken with her and I just want to know what to say to her. Thanks a ton and sorry again for the long post!

You should back up a few inches after disingaging 4LO or 4HI if the huibs are locked. You don't have to lock hubs to use the low gearing of a manual TC unless you also need the traction.

If you lock them like you did, then in MY truck, I usually apply pressure to get it out of 4wd with my right while either letting the truck roll back in neutral a few inches or put it reverse and back it up a few inches if it don't roll, and then slip in neutral. It shifts fine.

I engage / disengage the hubs with truck in 2WD either before shifting to 4Wd or after I've gotten it back into 2WD. Never while in 4WD as it's darn impossible. I usually have a good idea before hand as to whether I'll need them locked or not locked before I use the 4LO or 4HI positions.

Mine that I speak of here is my 1977 F150 4X4 with locking hubs and all gear NP-205 TC.

As to your question, I don't know what the truck was like before you borrowed it. It may be that you just found glitches with his 4WD that he already knows about? Might ask the guy you borrowed it from?
