confused about gear set up, install

I guess I'm missing something, but how are gears set-up in a shop if they are removed from the truck? I called up a shop today, and they asked if I would be bringing them in or install "under the truck"? Are they able to do all the install measurements (backlash, pinion depth, pattern set up) if the diff, ring and pinion are not in the truck??

they were reffering to bringing in the axles themselves.

OK, stupid me. Basically removing the whole rear end (diff casing, axle tubes, axles) and bringing it in. Guesss I'm a little fuzzy this morning.

front will be trickier.

yeah, some places charge more if you do them in the truck. but it could be worth it so you dont have to take the axles out yourself.

imo it shouldnt change the cost. its maybe slightly simplier if you brought them the axle since they wouldnt have to remove the drive shaft to get the pinion out.
