Post re-gearing quick question

hey guys, im new to the forum.
i have an '04 4.6 4x4 and its on 37s with stock gearing
so its pretty sluggish and the fuel mileage sucks and all lol
so my question is how much did you pay for regearing from your local shops just to get an idea if its gonna be affordable for a kid thats works after school
thanks!

I paid $250 an axle for install. I've heard of cheaper install prices. I got the gears and everything online, check ebay. It was right at $1000 for everything. Expect to pay between that and $1500.

Alright thanks I thought it was going to be ridiculous! But that's not too bad. I'll go around and ask the different shops around my area and see what kind of prices come up. And I think 4.88 are correct for 37's?

I am also looking to re-gear my truck. how much would re-gearing to 4.88 effect the rpm's/top speed? Like would 80-90 mph put a huge strain on them?

Try livin' in Canada. I paid around $1200 for Yukon 4.88's with install kits, from Accuautoparts.com, and another $1200 here in Canada, for the install.
But once I got the 37"s, I was sure happy I spent the cash.

yeah, thats what happened to me, yukons are almost double the price of other gears, i paid 660 for 4.88's yukons with install kits. install prices up in michigan is expensive, in virginia i could have gotten gears and them installed for 1500.

here they charge 1300 just for install.

Jeez some of these sound expensive! Offroadn98, where do you live and got that price? I live in Florida and jacked up trucks are pretty common down here so hopefully it will be pretty cheap.

And is there a big difference between Yukon gears And cheaper gears or are you just paying for the brand?

Don't get me wrong, Yukon makes top notch gear sets. Your definitely paying some for the name tho. The mechanics I had install mine are big Ford guys. I told them i was ordering 4.88's online (ebay), And i asked since the motives were cheaper than the yukon's, if they would be a good gear set to go with. He said motives are great gears. There is a 4x4 shop outside town that quoted me $250 an axle, i told him, he said thats about the going rate when i said it was a good deal. He said he would do it for 250/axle and he's alot closer i know he does good work so i went with him.

After they did it, i told them i was going to go easy on them for about 500 miles or so. He said they got them in there good. He said motives were pre broke in but it wouldn't hurt to take it easy on them if i wanted. SO i probably didn't go that easy on them. So i wouldn't say i speed too much but i def don't waste time getting to the speed limit(maybe a hair over) and im just plain rough as hell on them. 6,000 miles or so thus far and they don't make a sounds or "whinning" that everyone says comes with the motive gears

I was quoted $1600 for 4.88 precision gears front, back, and master installs. Thats for an 8.8 like you have too.

Another shop here wanted $1700.
