I Need a Gear Installer.....

I'm in northern Manitoba and I want to re-gear my front and rear diff's for larger tires. I went to a shop over in Flin Flon, but was not happy with what they told me. They said they could do it, but they did not sound too confident. Said it would be approx. 2 days of shop time at $90/hr.Making just the labor around $1500-1600.Plus I would be bringing all the parts, for another $1300, for gears and install kits. The guy at the shop said I might be better off finding a more experienced installer in the city, maybe. It can't possibly take 16 hours to re-gear a 4x4, can it? And can anyone recommend someone for this install, anywhere in Manitoba, but preferably in the north?
Maybe I should do it myself. Anyone have any success stories? Horror stories?

To do it right is labor intensive, but not that bad. Down here, you can generally get it done for $1600 parts and labor, so I would think you should be able to get it done for $2000 or less in Canada.

Being that Ford Racing has gears, have you talked to a Ford dealer yet?

I'm actually gonna be stopping in to see my local dealer tomorrow to see if they are willing/able/reasonably priced for this job. You would think that a dealer would have at least one qualified person to preform this type of work.

The cheapest price I could find in Canada for Yukon Gears and install kits was:
9.75 4.88 gears $360.install kit $360. Front 4.88 gears $325. install kit $250 $1295 total
plus shipping.
The cheapest price I could find in U.S. for Yukon Gears and install kits was:
9.75 4.88 gears $302.install kit $334. Front 4.88 gears $290. install kit $107 $1033 total
plus exchange, plus shipping. at www.accuautoparts.com

The dollar is pretty close to par right now, so I figure I'll go with the cross-border shopping. But on the above mentioned website, there are two master install kits for the 9.75 axle, one for use up to mid-year, and one for mid-end of year. I tried decoding my VIN to determine my build date, and all it gives me is a model year. How can I determine which install kit I would need.

Sorry for the self threadjacking....

seems like me and you are having some what of the same problem.

look on the diff. and find the tag that has a letter, three numbers, and a letter. mine is V 919 A. you can also look on the axle tube itself if that sticker isn't worn out. you'll have to do a search on the internet. good luck with that, i'm not having much luck in that department. i'm pretty sure my axle code means i have the older style axle though.

Too bad you dont live in AZ, I could knock both out in about 6 hours! Its like clock work ive done soo many regears. for motive gears and labor would be around $750 depending on the condition of the diffs.

It's times like this that make me wish I was closer to the rest of the world.

That's about what I figured,6-8 hours for both. Guess we'll see what the dealer has for a quote tomorrow.

Thanks for the tip on the axle code tag,chiefFX4. I'll have to check that out tomorrow as well. I'll let you know what I find out.

The build date of the truck should be on one of the stickers on the drivers door B pillar. That should give you a ballpark figure for the rear diff build date.

I don't know if a dealer will do Yukons, but I don't see why they wouldn't do Ford Racing.

Just got back from the dealer and they said "no way". Take it to someone more qualified.
I thought that a Ford Dealer would be able to fix anything on my Ford Truck. Guess I won't be going there anymore.
The search goes on.....

Just found this site while trying to decode the tag on my rear axle.

Using this method, my tag reads 8m09 which would be December 09 1998, putting my axle in the first part of the 99 model year, right?Meaning I would need the cheaper of the two master install kits offered at accuautoparts.com,right?

In any case I am going to call them and confirm all this info before ordering anything.

And I still need to find an installer......
