Rear Noise

I have a 06' F150 4x4 and it has a loud whinning noise when driving. Its not the tires because it still makes the noise on dirt roads. I checked the fluid in the rear end and its fine. The rear clutches were replaced about 3 months ago. Does anyone have any idea what it could be? Thanks!

"Whining" noise from the rear end can be caused by several things. A bad bearing in the differential or rear axle, or worn or misaligned gears are common causes.

If the whining started after they replaced the clutches, it's a pretty good bet they didn't align something properly when they put it back together. Take it back and complain.

We just took our '08 FX4 to the dealer for the same noise. We thought it was coming from the rear end but they think it is the tranny, so they are going to tear it apart and see what is going on. Luckily ours is still under warranty. I'll let you know what I find out, we should have the truck back Thursday.

I just dropped my 97 off at the shop and hour ago. I have loud whining coming from the rear end. They said its the pinion bearings going and are changing all the bearings and seals in the rearend today. I always do my own repairs but never a rearend before and don't have time to play with it. Estimate is $543.00 if limited slip clutches are bad its another $110.

Not a bad price for the bearing replacement. I wish I could find someplace in m y area that would do that job as reasonably!

It came to $696.48 total. New bearings seals and new L/S clutches. Place has been around since 1972 and are very reputable. I was happy with the price, seemed fair to me compared to others I checked out. 1997 8.8 3.55 L/S

You might wanna it taken back. Its not really hard to do, just time consuming and takes a little bit of thought.

I'm an expert at it on my rear axle now.

at blowing it apart
