Regearing

Ive got a 1998 F150 2wd with the 5.4L. Ive got a 3 inch suspension lift on it with 285/75R16 tires. I was just tryin to get an idea of what size gears i may want to put into my rear end because right now my truck is really slow and im hopein the regear may change that. I believe that i have the 9.75" rear end with the 3.55 gears in it. all help is appreciated.

I was running that same size tire a few years back with 4.10s. That would put you pretty close to how it was geared with stock sized tires, perhaps slightly lower.

2wd gears= 150-250 bucks, programmer=just as much. granted thats all depending of if he's up for installing them himself. but gears are definately the way to go. maybe a chip afterwards to maximize the performance. ive got stock 3.55LS with 255/70/16s, when i buy my next set of tires im gonna go with 285/70/16s. with that slight upgrade in tire size (like 2") it would only need 3.73s to bring it back to stock performance but im going to regear it to 4.10s. reason being the truck is barely cutting it performance wise stock. and deeper gears would be great. btw, do you have your tires on stock wheels?

jiford, i agree with wackem...i talked to Justin at VMP and he recommended 4.10 or better on our applications. i'm puttin 275/70s (little bit bigger than 33") on my stock 18" rims and that's what he said to put. even though y'all tires will be slightly smaller, don't think it'll make much difference. give him a shout at justin@vmptuning.com if you want a tune or free advice. i'm about to put a 2" autospring leveling kit and the tires i mentioned before will be goodyear mt/r with kevlar. also, thinking of headers and high flow cats. goona get with justin after engine mods and throw the hypertech in garbage to put the sct x3. gonna put tires on with stock gears and see how it performs and let you know.

i'ld go 4.10 or 4.30 imo. depends on how you feel about performance.
