Question Bad ring and pinion?

I have read a lot in these forums about hearing a whining noise that usually indicates a bad ring and pinion. I am uncertain if that is my case, what signs should I be looking for or listening for?

I have had some noise coming from my truck, it sounded just like an off balanced tire or really bad road noise, It turned out to be neither. I am going to be replacing both axle seals and rear bearings next weekend because of a leak. While I am changing the fluid aside from metal shavings in the oil what else should I be looking for that might indicate a bad ring and pinion. I don't know if it matters but I do have a LSD that I am not sure is working correctly.

I would appreciate any help because I do all my own work when I can.

Usually a ring and pinion noise is a whine that occurs between 35-45mph under very light throttle(just enough to maintain speed), any acceleration or decel will cause the noise to stop. Replacement of the gears requires some very specialized tools (pinion depth gauge, micrometer, dial indicator, etc.). Unless you are pretty good with your hands, I would leave that up to someone that's familiar. It takes me about 3 hours to replace and set up the gears correctly. And they never go together just once. Install it with the shims that come out, then you have to measure backlash, figure out what to do with the shims, take it apart, install the appropriate shims, and recheck backlash(repeat if necessary). I take that back, it did work out once(out of about 200 gear sets). Hope this helps.
