Vibration during initial acceleration

I am experiencing periodic shudder/vibration during initial acceleration. I say periodic because in only occurs during a moderate to high speed start (from a dead stop) and only lasts for a couple of seconds.

The shudder feels similar to the experience you have when you run over the rumble strips that some state are now putting in between lanes and on the shoulders of highways . If I accelerate slowly from a dead stop I do not experience any vibration. It almost feels like it is coming from the rear differential or maybe a u-joint.

The truck is a 2006 5.4 F-150 with limited slip differential. Thank you in advance for any assistance/pointers you can provide

Had an 05 do the same thing. Ended up being the center support bearing on the two piece rear driveshaft. If you have a two piece shaft, I would start there. However, from Ford, you can only get the entire driveshaft assy, not just the center bearing.

Hey Phattboy,

Did you ever resolve this? My 06 SCREW is doing the exact same thing.

I did get a resolution and it wasn't pretty. The differential clutches were worn out and had to be replaced. The dealer quoted $1400 to fix however I did find a local shop that specializes in differentials to do the job for $730.

I had the rear end fluid changed twice (non-dealer) before this occurred but the dealer did tell me two important facts that you MUST do when changing fluid to help prevent this.

1.) Only use Synthetic rear end fluid(again I had an 06 so consult your dealer for specific model years ) and
2.) Ensure you shop adds the required friction inhibitor when changing the fluid. This apparently preserves the life of the clutches to some degree.

Good luck and hope that helps
