Gears
Gears
I decided I am not going to regear my truck myself I really dont have time so
I called a local shop today to get a quote for regearing front and rear to 4.88and he said labor and gears out the door $1400, that sounds inline with everything I`ve read on here, I asked him what brand of gears they would recommend or carry and he said they have had real good luck with Zumbrota gears out of MN. he also said they run these in they`re tow truck and have had no problems at all, I`m alittle hesitant about puting Zumbrota gears in as I`ve never heard anything about this brand I would rather put Yukon gears in but I thought I would run this by you guys and get your opinons on it first, Which brand do you think I should get and why?

That is a tough call, I personally would not want to go with an unknown gear manufacturer. But if they are going to warranty your gears if you went with the other gears, and they save you some coin, I would say go for it. If they are using it in tow trucks and are having luck I would not see why your truck would be any different.
The ONLY gears I have had trouble with in the past was genuine gears. They are called Genu-WHINE gears for a reason I soon found out. It was a buddies heep, so i didn't mind too much !
I personally have heard nothing, good or bad, about Zumbrota's gears. I would ask the company what kinda of warranty your getting with those. What kind of warranty are they offering on there work. That would be my big deciding factor. If they are running them in their tow truck, they might be decent. Ask them about other gears as well. its a big investment, so keep on doing your research.
*** They ARE known company for transmissiona and T-case rebuilds and what not. I have heard only good things, no bad, on there quality of work. They are most often fairly priced as well. Again, this is for their Transmission work. They are a known company.

Thanks for the help I knew you fellows would come through
I forgot to ask him about the warranty stuff but I`ll call back and ask him, I had 4 or 5 people recommend this shop(Driveline Services in Monroe NC.) all they do is drivetrain work so I feel good about letting them work on my truck and when I called down there the fellow I talked to was very helpfull and answered all my questions, I hate calling a reputable shop and whoever you talk to is a Knowitall about everything, I may go with the off brand gear depending on the price and whatever warranty comes with it, thanks again for the direction and help

I agree. If there is some sort of warranty then i'd say go for it. You could also ask him how much extra it would be for yukon, motive, precision...
Then again he might be offended that you are questioning him. Might give you some piece of mind tho.
