Gear opinion

OK! I have a 2006 F-150 Super Cab 4x4 XLT with the 5.4 triton v8 3.55 gears. I have a 6 inch pro comp lift with 325/65R18 terra grapplers wich is a 35 inch tire, K&N drop in air filter, magnaglow exhaust, and superchip programer wich i am running the 87 octane performance tune. I don't go off road much until hunting season then it is about every weekend some off roading when taking the 4 wheeler out. I don't do much towing but i am thinking soon on getting a bass boat. I do alot of city driving not much on the highway. Work everyday is about 15 miles there and 15 back all city driving. I want to regear to 4.10 or 4.56 front and rear. Not sure that either of them will give me worse fuel millage then what i am getting now with the 3.55 gears.I have got the price quot for both with 4 wheel parts doing the instal with genuine gears and mag-hytech diff cover. I was hoping to get some opinions-ups and downs on the both from people who are running them. I want to give them half down to get the parts ordered on monday the 14th. I will go with the majority on this post. I am not leaning toward either one. The post's here is what will make my mind up. Thanks to everyone that helps me out on this subject. 4.10 or 4.56?

If you say your truck is silver, then I may have to check my driveway and see if mine is still there.

If you do mostly city driving, the lower the gear (numerically higher) the less work your truck will have to do and thus the less fuel you will burn... to a certain extent anyhow. I would run 4.56's in your differentials and enjoy the extra acceleration and torque that they provide. I have the same setup as you, but with 17" rims and Pro Comp mud terrains. I am in the market for 4.88 gears, but I do a fair amount of towin, off roading and might be going with 37's when it is time for new tires. I think 4.56's will be just right for what you are looking for, and really not too bad on the freeway either.

Edit: While it is always good to poll a group and see what they prefer, it is ultimately your truck and if you start to lean one way or the next you should act on that feeling rather than the group's.

Nice truck tornadom. I have been doing alot of research on this to try and make sure i make the right choice. I have read all the post here on it and also looked at charts. I think i am leaning more toward the 4.56 gearing. I just realy wanted to get everyones ups and downs. After all the things i have read here as far as people documenting the miles per gallon they are getting they are both better than what i am getting now.

quote (I do a fair amount of towin, off roading)
I am hoping to do some towing with a new boat, and i wish there was a place to go offroading here close to me. No where here in wpb florida to go!

If you are talking about a ski boat, fishing boat sort of boat then you would be fine towing with the 4.56's. If you are talking about a cabin cruiser, big *** sort of boat then maybe the 4.88's are a better choice. Personally, I like the extra grunt, and want a nice crawl ratio for steep hills so I am going with 4.88's. I also tow about once per week and drive less than 70mph on the freeway so the lower gears are good with me.

In your situation, I think the 4.56's are a perfect fit.

Thanks for the compliment on my truck. It is still the same as in my signature picture, but about 2" higher in the rear now thanks to an add a leaf.

Thanks for the replies and help. I just called them up and gave them half down to get the parts ordered up on the 4.56. They are going to get the parts in tomorrow. They will start on it wed hopefully i will get it back thursday afternoon. They said it is about a day and a half job so 2 days is cool. I will let you all know the outcome. Tornadom i had the 1.5 add leaf added when they did the 6inch lift also. To answer your question lariat 1650.00 out the door. That is the 4.56 genuine gears front and rear,mag-hytech diff cover, royal purple gear oil 75x90 front 75x140 rear something like that, labor and taxes. I can't wait to get it back.

Is that $1650 per pumpkin? Or total both front and rear?

Which 4wheelparts are you going to? Is it a sale?

Total for both. No it is not a sale they are running. They will work with you on price you just need to sit down and talk to them about what you want. It was origanly around 1900.00 plus tax. 4wheel parts in west palm beach florida. I am sure if they get a customer that is willing to drop there pants they will get them for alot more!!

Well i got it back and i love it. What a big difference it makes. That is probably the most noticeable performance gain mod i have done. I can't wait to see the fuel milliage i get now.
