Question thoughts on 2-lo setup

I have a 98 f150 with a v-6 5spd 4x4 with a manual transfer case. My question is what are your thoughts on driving in 4lo with the front axle unlocked. I know this can be accomplished by wiring a switch in the wiring between the transfer case and the central axle disconnect. The reason I want to do this is because th reverse on the 5spd is very steep, and makes it difficult to back a trailer up any sort of incline, and i don't want to put any bind on the drive line by being in 4lo on dry pavement. As of right now, this is just in the idea stages and I was wanting to bat it around and get other's ideas.

TIA

Sounds fine. It should help save your clutch in that condition!

Very practical for the application you've described. Makes a lot of sense for 'spotting' a trailer in a campground if you need to turn a lot.

Please post the wiring schematic.

Another one that makes as much sense to me is for the xfer case to be able to choose between EITHER the front or rear axle for 2wD -- that way we wouldn't need to drag around 4 bags of sand in the bed every winter.

ARE YOU READING THIS FORD MOTOR COMPANY???

BigBunnell,

I have used that trick in the past. It allows me to use 4x4 so the T-case gets a work out every once and a while. As my truck is still under warranty I just disconnect the electrical connector to the vacuum selonoid. You should have no problems with the front axle. As a precaution always flip the switch before engaging 4x4. This will insure the front axles do not engage when you shift into 4WD.
