Hesitation and shake in rearend

I've read several articles on similar problems, but haven't found the answer yet. So here's the problem: Got a 97' scab 4x4 w/ 197,000 miles. When I accelerate from a dead stop something (sounds like in the rear end) hesitates before it grabs. It'll grab and make a clunk noise and then it goes on just fine. It's done this for a while but is getting worse especially since I put larger Buckshots on. I don't want the problem to get worse and cause costly repairs. Also I think this problem could be what causes the truck to shake like hell at about 40-45 mph when the RPMs are low. Anybody have any suggestions to what all of this could be. I'll probably replace the u-joints for starters but need more help.........

Clunks: U-joints first.
Shakes under those conditions: Low grade misfire or converter shudder.

Thanks for the reply... I would like to think it's the u joints but its a slip between pushing the gas pedal and the truck beginning to move. It's not a shake like misfiring because I've had that happen. This is a shake that feels like it's in the rearend or rear tires. It shakes me in my seat.

Same thing with my '98 SCab. When it begins to shake, I can see in the rearview mirror the end of the bed moving up and down. I've replaced the shocks with Bilstiens. I wonder if it's worn leaf spring bushings along with driveshaft balance/indexing. I have to slow to 25 mph before the shakin' stops. When warm it doesn't shake as much.

Someday we will figure this one out.

well, i just left the shop, i had my u-joints replaced and found out that my right rear caliper was hangin' up on the rotor, so..... 2 new u-joints, 2 calipers, ceramic pads and 2 new rotors later, my hesitation and shake are gone..... try checking these things they may help you guys

and if you decide to replace rear calipers, go with Rabestos, they come loaded with ceramic pads, and i got mine for $120 a piece..... just a thought...

total cost with labor through a friend at Belletire was $450.00 out the door..

This sounds like it might fix my shaking...but I asked a friend of mine that's a mechanic and he said the slip and jerk at takeoff is the torque converter in the transmission. He said it's not hurting anything so I guess I'll quit worrying about it.

well like i said when i posted up, the jerk from accellerator push to truck taking movement was my issue, i replaced the u-joints and i have no problem at all, i have 112,000 miles on mine, pretty cheap fix for a big problem that i thought i was having, you know what i mean, i would try that before i just didn't worry about it, anytime a vehicle has a jerkiness in the driveline it cannot just be something not to worry about otherwise they would come from the factory with the jerkiness, but that is just my $0.02 worth, take it or leave it.... good luck bud, post back up if you find out that it was something else....

I had the same symptom. I got it to repeatedly do this in the parking lot, until I put it in park and then it never did it again. I scared the hella outta me, thought the tranny was toast. It was just like it was in neutral and then slamms in gear all of the sudden.

I think I may have put it in od off without knowing it, there is no indicater on my 2004. That is the only thing I can think of since the problem has not returned.

update to ^^^, I do have OD off indicator in the LCD window, just noticed it today. Also the problem was not OD off because I accidently had it on again and the truck did not act up... so that leaves me still wondering what was wrong with it that day
