well i was quoted 1600 for the whole thing.. now it might be a better deal to do both because of the labor costs!

Yeah, that sounds high for the rear only.

4wp quoted me $1600 for 4.10's front and rear. $1200 just for the rear sounds high.

I did it myself and only bought the ring and pinion sets plus the pinion bearings. Everyone will try to sell you a bearing kit that includes all kinds of stuff but if your truck has low miles that would be a waste money.

You could even reuse the pinion bearings if you can get them off without damaging them. I didn't want to take the chance though.

Pinion bearings are about $80 or so for the front and back together.

Oh hand the oil is pretty high! probably about another 80 or so.

The labor is high because it's an exacting job that takes training, experience, patience, and special tools.

nwaf150, what kind of parts were you quoted with? i spent 1100 for my rear, but i bought yukons and a diff cover. To do the job yourself you need the ring and pinion set, install kits, gear oil, in addition to a bunch of expensive tools such as dial indicator, bearing press, and bearing puller. Its so expensive because as glc said it requires extreme precision and patience. Gear setup is pretty serious stuff.

I just had my rear done for $450. I watched him the whole time and he did a great job. I got the Ford Racing Gears. Gears have been great ever since. Find a shop that works on Mustangs and they will take care of you. Those guys change gears all the time.

The price quoted was for ring and pinion, install kit, oil, labor. Oh and I have all the tools mentioned. I am thinking of researching the hell out of the procedure and trying it myself. I usually try and do all my own stuff if I can. If i have issues I have a couple of friends to fall back on that i'm sure could handle it. I looked up the parts and they are only about 500$ for everything so 700$ for labor on a few hours of work is a joke. I know guys that went to college for 8yrs and dont make that an hour.

Do it man! There is nothing like doing it yourself. As long as you have the time to do it slow incase you run into a snag you won't have any troubles.

The tools aren't that expensive. dial indicator $30-$40. bearing pess can be used to press and to remove bearings. $100

Let me know if you need any help. I'll give you all the help I can!

nothing beats f-in up a $35k+ truck by being a cheap azz. just my imo, but unless you are skilled in this trade, i would leave it to the professionals. Hey, that means you dont buy a few rounds, or buy a few cartoons of smokes, or whatever your vice may be.

As well as I can tell I haven't ********* anything up yet on my 42k truck or my 30k Bike. It's not that i'm cheap i just don't enjoy getting it broke off in my a$$ like some people do.
