I'll do some mods here and there, something that requires precision, can ruin parts, and can put the truck down for a time I leave to a professional (if for no other reason than I get to yell at somebody else instead of myself if problems come up)

scouty: nice setup
crooked: it will be easier. its half the work. The rear axle doesnt need to be removed from the truck. You just pop the cover, pull out axle shafts, and remove the carrier.
Labor costs for the rear are about half of the front.

I was looking for a 4:10 swap for my 97 and was quoted $846 at one shop and thought that was a bit high. I went to a 4 X 4 specailty shop and the nice lady quoted $1600 for the rear only. I thought she misunderstood and was looking a 4 wheel drive, but she was seriour about 2 wheel drive.

guess it sounds like Im getting a pretty good deal...my gears are being installed next thursday just the rear by the way....4.56 precision gears paid 215.00 with tax and labor is $225.00...its a performance shop that has been here for 50 years...everyone recommended him to me...and the other shop i called wanted a total of 1100.00 for the same thing
Customer pay on a job like that at the Ford dealer where I work is about 8 hours at $92.50/hr plus parts. To do the job right takes at least 4 to 5 hours minimum of teardown, clean, assemble, replace bearings, set up the gears, check backlash (which never comes out right the first time), tear down, reset backlash, check backlash again (at least one more time), reassemble while giving the rtv time to set, add fluids, then finally test drive to verify repair and no gear noise. I have set up about 100 gearsets and it still takes me a minimum of 4 hours to do the job right. Just to let you know.
