Hey, no one does man, have you checked around at other shops? 4wp in memphis quoted me about $2k to do front and rear, so if its not that far of a drive look into something like that, or based on n.w. ark, dallas and tulsa might be closer. not trying to give ya a hard time, i would just hate to have you install it and something breaks, not because of improper install, but defective product, and since you did it yourself, the gear company tries to f you over. nothing but love man.

Alot of people are affraid of Technicians today, usually because they think they are getting ripped off every single time. It is more fun, however, when the d.u.i.....I mean d.i.y'.er screws up and ends up costing twice as much.

It looks like I lucked into having a good, and cheap shop locally. A quote of 1400 for parts/labor with yukon gears sounds good. Its the same shop that did the gears in my mustang, I beat the crap out of it and they held up great.

I'll do some mods here and there, something that requires precision, can ruin parts, and can put the truck down for a time I leave to a professional (if for no other reason than I get to yell at somebody else instead of myself if problems come up)

All too often, just go easy on them at first.

Let a good shop do the work. You get what you pay for!
I got a price of 1500.00 for 4.10's, hand held tuner and dyno tuned with 3 custom tunes.

If you have the time, do a write up. I would like to follow in your steps. I figured a 4x2 has to be even easier.

scouty: nice setup

crooked: it will be easier. its half the work. The rear axle doesnt need to be removed from the truck. You just pop the cover, pull out axle shafts, and remove the carrier.
Labor costs for the rear are about half of the front.

I was looking for a 4:10 swap for my 97 and was quoted $846 at one shop and thought that was a bit high. I went to a 4 X 4 specailty shop and the nice lady quoted $1600 for the rear only. I thought she misunderstood and was looking a 4 wheel drive, but she was seriour about 2 wheel drive.

Thanks tnsilverfx4- I was quoted $750.00 for 4.88 Yukons out the door. The guy at the shop recommended the 4.88's over the 4.56's. Any opinions out there. I am runnin 35's inch tires with the 5.4. I would like to be a have a little more pep than stock wheels. I would say that regearing is almost a "must do" after a 6'lift with 35's.

Customer pay on a job like that at the Ford dealer where I work is about 8 hours at $92.50/hr plus parts. To do the job right takes at least 4 to 5 hours minimum of teardown, clean, assemble, replace bearings, set up the gears, check backlash (which never comes out right the first time), tear down, reset backlash, check backlash again (at least one more time), reassemble while giving the rtv time to set, add fluids, then finally test drive to verify repair and no gear noise. I have set up about 100 gearsets and it still takes me a minimum of 4 hours to do the job right. Just to let you know.
