Post speedometer reving?

Hello Everyone,
I recently purchased a new Ford truck. Just today, in the rain, I decided to try out 4x4. I put it into 4 HIGH and it worked great. After parking it, I wanted to try out the rest of the gears (I have a manual 4x4 selector), and put it into 4 LOW. The engine was in neutral at the time. After switching out of 4 LOW, the speedometer revved all the way to the max, but the engine didn't rev at all. What happened? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
John

John
See my message posted 6-6-00.
My 2000 F150 has had an erratic speedometer
for 3 months. They repalced the cluster...
same problem. The dealer has had another on
backorder for 6 weeks now. Sounds like a
similair problem. My bounces from 0-120
and everywhere inbetween as I drive along.

>>>>While not a Ford truck or Ford product at all I had a similar experience with a 93 Chevy Caprice with a digital speedo. While in neutral if you revved the engine the speedometer would run up like a tach. Mr. Goodwrench couldn't find a problem with it. But the speedometer did function perfectly while driving.

The gas pedal wasn't even pressed down though, and the speedometer is fine during driving.
