Maybe a dumb question...

How can I tell which gears are on my 04 F150 STX 4x4 with a towing package? I've searched the net, and the forums, and haven't found an answer. Most guys on here know their gear size, but I bought mine used, and haven't a clue. Is there some good way to tell?

Thanks!

If you got the tow package, you will have a hitch, not just the bumper, a 4and 7 pin connector, and a transmission cooler that looks liken the one pictured here. If it is smaller than this, it does not have the tow package.

As far as the door sticker, there is nothing on there to indicate a tow package.

Think he was asking what gears he had. Sayingthat he had the tow package thinking that would be the way to tell. The door sticker wont tell you if you have the tow package, but the tow pakage wont tell you what gears you have no matter how many times you ask it

You are correct, I misread the question thinking how can I tell if I have the tow package. Guess I need some more coffee this morning.

LoL, thanks Jughead! That's exactly what I was looking for!

You know Kingfish, I stood outside for 20 minutes talking to the tow package, and not once would it tell me... Did tell me the meaning of life though! LoL

Hmm, according to the link, I have 3.55 gears, you think I may have 3.73?

The tow package can be had with the 3.55, the 3.73, and the 4.10(but only with the HD payload package. Doubt the code is wrong. If it states a 3.55 and no mods have been done to the truck, that is what you have.

the door sticker will tell u the axle code, and yes u can get ur gears from the axle code.

heres a website to decode the sticker

http://www.fordf150.net/howto/decode.php

if u want to find out for sure, get ur *** under the truck and read the tags that are bolted to the diffs. the tags will tell u everything, the gear ratio, LS or not, and the size.

it will prob read somrthing like this "975 3LS73" for the rear (though if its not limited slip, it wont say LS obviously.)

the 975 is the 9.75" axle, and the 3LS73 means 3.73 limited slip

the front will b something like this "88 373".

meaning the axle is 8.8" and 3.73gears (the front is always a open diff, unless a aftermarket is installed)

Ok, thanks for the help... I didn't know if it would have any type of tag on the unit itself. The code on the sticker is 19... which according to the decode site is 3.55 Non Limited Slip. The guy who had the truck before me did some mods to it, but I don't know how many. I know that he had new wheels and tires, and exhaust, I guess the gears could've been changed... I'm not sure... I'll have to get under there to be 100% sure I guess.

LoL, some women just don't understand... I think my wife would probably kiss my truck before me though, so I have a good one!
