AWD transfer Case
99 expidition. Normally operates in AWD setting. Did'nt really notice anything wrong(beleive it was summer) other than 4x4 trouble light came on. While in for an annual inspection had our dealer look into the problem. They replaced some hall effect sensors and the light was not on.
After driving a day or two the truck seemed as if it was in 4WD constantly. Unable to turn into driveway, parking places, etc.
Back to ford. Technician stated that sometimes it needs to be driven before computer is able to grasp the new information provided by the new sensors.
We drove for a few more days. No change.
Back to ford. They again replaced all of the same sensors and again told us to drive it.
On our last visit they said that the truck indeed was stuck in 4wd and initial cost to drop the tranfer case was $500.
Anyone with any similar expierience or knowledge of what could cause this.
Right now the front drive shaft is laying beside the driveway but winter is on the way!!!!

Sure, I'll chime in...
The mechanic's a putz. First, we need to determine if it's an electrical issue with the Control Trac Automatic 4wd system, or if it's a mechanical issue with the transfer case. The simple way to determine that is to unplug the large connector on the transfer case and see if the problem goes away. If so, it's electronic, if not it's mechanical.
Try that and check back. We'll go from there.
