Need PTO advice

Anyone with PTO experience?

My son swears by his Mustang forum for getting solid help so I thought I’d give a try and join this group. Looks like a great forum.

We have a project 1990 F350 truck, bought junked with a 351 Windsor and 5 spd ZF transmission, without a bed. We’re trying to make a dump truck out of it. It’s pretty much finished except for the hydraulic lift. Prior to adding the dump bed, we’re trying to sort out the hydraulics and make it work.

Here’s my problem.

We have a Chelsea PTO with a Ford gear configuration and the hydraulic cylinder (lift and lower) just doesn’t seem to work. Not sure where to begin to troubleshoot.

The PTO seems to engage, and you can see a slight flow in the hydraulic oil tank. The flow reverses when you throw the tank control in the other direction. That seems correct but the flow, in either direction is very slow and tranquil. When changing lift direction, the oil is at a standstill for about 2-3 seconds before reversing flow. Guess I expected a stronger flow.

Anyway we have not yet attached the dump bed, so the hydraulic is not under weight pressure. You can depress the cylinder by manpower or fully extend, so it does not seem seized.

Any help, links or direction you can offer to better understand the function of the PTO, pump, and hydraulics would be extremely appreciated.

For most pre-'97 questions, I'd recommend FSB. But for this, I'd try TheDieselStop.com .

But why are you doing this on a 1/2-ton chassis? It won't be able to carry 1/2-deep bed of dirt safely.

did you bleed the air out of the hydraulic lines?

got enough hydraulic fluid?

Just a couple of ideas.

You also need the tank higher then the pto, they don't suck oil. Are you sure the gearing is right?
