rear end going bad
rear end going bad
here's the problem... the rearend in my 84 f150 xcab (2wd 351 auto) is starting to go out and i've checked and replaced everything else (ujoints, bearings, etc) now the dilemma the truck has 240,000miles on it. it still runs strong., but i'm not sure if it's worth putting another rearend under any suggestions would be appreciated.... thanks buck
You should be able to find a complete rear axle with the same or CLOSE gear ratio for less than $200, and it takes about an hour to swap. You don't even have to open the brake system. Click my black Bronco below & look in the 8.8" Axle album. Even if you put in a 9" (they're totally interchangeable), it's the same process. You can use any rear axle up to '96, and I recommend '87-96 for the better axle flange pilots, if nothing else.
If you REALLY want to go crazy, track down an '04-up E150 rear axle and you'll have rear disk brakes, but that takes a lot more work, and you'll have to buy 16" rims & tires.
