rearend BUSTED

I drive alot of rough rds but this was ridiculous! I broke the right rear axle off at the pumpkin or at least the outer shell. Has anyone seen this before? It literally looked like some one took a hacksaw and cut around the axle. I use this truck for work in really remote areas and now I don't have confidence in the truck. Its a 06 F150 4 dr with 39k miles and always has an ATV in the back. Of course it's outta warranty so i guess the boss is gonna have to pony up!

Has anyone had this happen to them? And if so how did you remedy so it wouldn't happen again. I use it for an enforcement vehicle so sometimes it has to take the abuse of hurried trips down rough rds. But I try to take care of it, I hate walking through the dessert!

Thanks for any ideas.

Does it have an 8.8" or a 9.75" axle? The 8.8" is known to be slightly weak in that area, but a good welder can put a bead all the way around the tube & they're generally OK for HD use. But swapping to a 9.75" will eliminate that altogether.

If it was a 9.75" that broke...
