4x4 Clunk

I recently bought my f150 from a private sale... it has a 4 in lift and 33 inch mud terrain tires... and was clearly offroaded in the past. The problem is that when i load up the 4x4 after it has already been engaged i think i hear the front diffrntal clunking. i also took it out in the mud in 4 low and had the same problem...but much worse. What parts would i have to replace to fix this type of problem.
thanks

The front axle may not be fully engaged and is causing the clunk. Check for vacuum at the shift motor. No vacuum or partial vacuum is indicative of the lines being damaged or the vacuum solenoids are not working properly and or leaking. The shift motor or the internals of the front diff/axle may be defective.

I have had the same problem, my buddy owns a shop and they cant figure it out, they checked all the solenoids and they are all fine... they also did this numerous times over a week while i was out of town.

Now i did see this thick greesy type of residue on my passenger side lower control arm... i just noticed it because i got to wash my truck for the first time and also noticed axle seals leaking in the rear.

I was wondering if this greese residue could be part of the 4x4 problem... maybe everythings working but somethings broken up front?

any insight would be greatly appreciated its been driving me crazy

THanks
Todd

me too

mine does that too! Engages in 4 wheel fine. When you push the gas a little and when certain amount of torque is there, It clunks. In forward and reverse.
Sounds like its only coming from one side. To me it sounds like something is not tight on my Lift kit, which is rancho.
It might be some part of the lift kit Flex back and fourth, either way i'm going to find it, but i haven't had time lately.

In process of putting some goodies on the truck (cams, headers, cai, plugs) After them,in which should be done this week. I'm going to look into it.

yeah i think mine is coming from the passenger front, it is not a lift kit though, i have a leveling kit and have had it for a while, just started one day after i put it in 4 wheel going up the drive way... it has to be part of the 4 wheel system just dont know where it is and it pisses me off... hahaha

anyone with this problem or possible solutions would be great

Thanks
Todd

mine

mine only does in the beginning.
ex: hit gas, torque is applie, i hear a clunk, then all is good until i let off gas, then reapply some throttle.

I pulled down one of my torsion bars. I think it might be them. the bolts that go thru the torsion bar itself is Not to diameter, so there is room to move. Not much, but enough to give me a little clunk

I had a similar problem with my truck. I'd get a clunk in the frontend mostly when in 2wd and sometimes in 4wd. It almost felt like the tranny was binding up and would release (hard!) when I slowed down... At first, it only happened once every few months, then eventually every other day.

I had it looked at and it turned out being the IWE Solenoid. It ruined my driver's side hub and it had to be replaced also. Now all is well...

I have had the seleniod replaced and its still doing it. it just does it in 4 wheel driveforward and reverse under power, the only thing i can think of is that it is a hub but i dont know... im trying to find someone who has had this problem before i keep ripping things apart to just check. I have an 04 and the solenoids from 04 didnt have the little water flap or whatever and they were going bad but that unfortunately wasnt the problem.

Thanks for your input
