Ball joints and front axle

I'm working on an 02 4x4 f250 and have run into a hiccup. I have replaced the ball joints on the drivers side front and have found it impossible to get the rear seal back to posistion. I have decided to replace it along with the outside axle seal. It appears these have to be installed after the drive shaft. Should the axle slide out or do I need to pull the differential cover? I had a hard time getting the top ball joint in and I am hoping to get some insight into the proper procedure.

Turns out the drive shaft pulls out like a cv on a car, it has a pressed on grease seal on the outer axle. The grease seal inner part spins with the front axle. Correct terminology would be knuckle seal.
