Thinking about going to 4.10 gears on my 06 2X4

Next month I will be changing tires from 30" to 33". I was talking to Mike from Troyer Performance and he recommended a gear change for anything above a 10% change in tire height which corresponds to my situation. The good thing is is that I currently have an 06 4.6l 2 wheel drive with 3.55 limited slip which means I don't have to spend thousands to change gears. I'm pretty unfamiliar when it comes to gears so pardon me if my questions are noobish!

1) How much would parts cost?
2) Where can I buy them? Anywhere online or is a local shop better?
3) How much does installation usually cost? How many hours?
4) Do I need to just do the back or do I have to do the front also? I would imagine it would just be the back since its 2 wheel drive.
5) Any comments from those that have 4.10s on their 2WD F150?

My tunes from Troyer should be in next week so I will have superb performance. I am afraid that once I get new tires I will lose some of the performance, but getting the 4.10 gears would make up for that loss.

Thanks,
Doug

1) Depends on the brand of gears...in my case, I paid $260 for Precision Gears.
2) I bought mines from Accu Auto Parts online.
3) I was charged 4 hours ($70/hr)
4) 2WD only back...4WD, back and front...
5) I'm still in the breakin phase, but I noticed the truck gets off the line much quicker...on the highway, it revs kind of high like a standard in a lower gear just ready to take off if I give it the gas...At 70 mph, I'm just over 2,100 rpm with 32" tires...it feels more agressive like a sports car basically...

going from a 30 to a 33, and with the smaller engine you have I would suggest 4.56 gears. My tires were only 5%~ larger than stock, (albeit much wider, and heavier when combined with the 22 inch wheels) and I went with 4.1. It was a noticable gain, but if I could do it all over again I likely would have chosen the 4.56 gears.

Although, it depends on your needs and driving habits. If you want to have a "quick" truck get the 4.56. If you just want to keep it reasonable and get some half-decent MPG, go with 4.1

As for cost, expect $650-900 OTD.

Thanks for the replies. I haven't even considered 4.56 gears, I'll look into them.

I have a similar question I just did a 6" lift with 33/13.5/20 on my 04 f-150 5.4L. I was saving up to have the truck regeared and I was planning on going with 4.56 but someone told me that I would be good in getting 4.10, any suggestions in which would be best. Thanks.

all depends on your driving habits / style and where you drive it...
4.1's if your a highway driver mostly. 4.56 if your driving thru town a lot.

i went with 4.88's with my 35" tires because when these are bald im steppin up to 37 or 38.5. so if you plan on running bigger tires go with the 4.56

I recently installed a set of Richmond 4.10 gears in my 2000 F-150. From the first time I drove the truck it had a howl that would start at about 45mph and disappear at 60mph. I have the rearend cover off 3 times. The backlash is set at .0010 and the pinion is shimmed @.028 as per Richmond. I have had the truck to two reputable ring and pinion shops and they both told me the cut of the gears and that high performance gears simply make noise.Has any one encountered the same problem after installing anew set of gears or are these guys being up front and honest with me? I am a new memberto this site so any info would be appreciated. My truck is a 2000 F-150. I have added the 2001 Lightning factory wheels with a set of Toyo Proxes tires,a BBk 75 mm throttle body, Mac underdrive pulleys, the exhaust dumps into two seperate pipes that empty into a Magnaflow X pipe, a set of 40 series Flowmaster mufflers, and the pipes stop just inside the rear bumper.and a Diablo reprogrammer brings it all together. After reading some of your postings I realized I had joined the right bunch of motorheads.

vincent all 4.10s in almost every car make noise

ive got some friends with camaro's and trans am's that have 4.10s and they make noise. Some gear sets once "broken in" after 500 miles they are alot quiter then when they first were installed. Hopefully they told you to take it easy for the first 500 miles. At that point, i would pull the battery off truck for about 10 min for the pcm to reset itself so it can relearn your real driving habits.

I run 4.10s with street tires, 285-60R18...about a 31 inch tire.
Great mod, money well spent.
Truck had 3.31 from the factory...was a total dog.

Here are some pics of my tach/speedo at various speeds.

You can see that rpm aren't really all that high.

I've got a lot of mods, including a supercharger.

MPG really wasn't noticeably different.
IMHO, these are heavy truck that need gear help.

You won't regret it.
And it's not one of those "I think I can feel a difference" mods...you will definitely feel a differece.

I was just rereading what i wrote, and i hope you didnt think i meant drive without the battery . You wont make it very far. I mean disconnect the battery for a few minutes, and let the computer relearn your driving habits on how you normally drive, assuming you have met your prescribed breakin period (usually 500 miles)
