A Clunk From a Stop....

Well, just bought a 2004 F150, FX-4 with the 5.4L with 60k miles. Here's the problem: when I'm at a dead stop and take off I hear a clunk which sounds as if it is coming from the rear end. I have even tried rolling and then accelerating and the clunk still happens. It almost sounds like the differential gears are banging. I do not hear the noise when I go in reverse. However, when I roll at around 5 mph and slam on the breaks, I can still hear the noise. I've checked the tranny fluid....looks good.

Any ideas? I've been told it may be a loose drave shaft at pumpkin and possibly that the drive shaft splines, where it enters the tranny, may need lubrication.

Can it be the tranny? Maybe the differential needs fluid?

Thanks,
nick

I too get a clunk sometimes, I took it to the dealer described it to them in great detail, even took and showed it too them. They checked it out told me it was nothing??? Mine seems to happen most when accelerating, after cornering, id say anytime but most of all during acceleration. Sorry I cant be of much help this is just my experience, Ill keep a watch to see what others say.

Clunk

HAVE A 04 4X4 MYSELF HAD THE SAME NOISE. TOOK IT TO THE DEALER. THERE IS A TSB ON THIS PROBLEM. THE SPLINE SEEMS TO NEED A DIFFRENET GREASE THAN WHAT CAME OUT OF THE FACTORY. DONT KNOW WHAT THEY USED BUT IT SOLVED MY PROBLEM.

Thanks for the help people. The clunk is ONLY when I am accelerating from a stop...it happens no other time. I have been told that it is the splines and the poor factory grease. I'm taking it in this evening....hopefully, it will get fixed. I'll keep ya's updated.

I have a 2004 FX4 and it had the same problem. It is the original grease that dries out. All you need to do is take of the driveshaft and lube it like hell use hi temp brake grease it will get rid of it for another couple of years. On my truck it got fixed.

Thanks for the help people. I just got my truck back from the dealer today and, sure enough, it was the driveshaft grease the dried out. They greased the hell outta of it, and all is good.

Thanks again!!!

(bump) DRove the truck today to work, noticed the same thing. Only on acceleration i get this clunk in my drivetrain. I am wondering, what part of the slip yoke are you guys greasing ? Isn't the slip yoked bathed in ATF ? Wouldn't the ATF wash away any "packed" grease ? Please explain. Thanks for any help.

Vereyone at the shop is calling me a moron for thinking this will be the fix. Please, anyone, shed some light on this. I have down time, and want to fix it now. Will putting the grease in the female end of the slip yoke hurt the transfer case ? This grease will NOT dry out like most of you are claiming, but rather be slowly washed away by the hot ATF fluid, and will be mixed into the transfer case.

??????????

Well, I decided re-greasing the slip yoke would just be retarded. Didn't make ANY sense to me, doesn't seem like it would help, and had no extra input from any of yall. So i went about checking other parts.

After awhile of checking and tightening up everything, noticed my front shackle on my rear right (driver) was loose as chit. Tightened it up real good, took for a test drive and no more clunk, no more anything. Smooth as glass again.

Thanks for all the help !

Anyone else feeling the "clunk" make sure everything is tight, greased, and in porper working order.
