Question bigger tires no downshifting

I installed 275/70/16 tires on my truck and ever since then my truck does not down shift when going w.o.t.(trying to pass a slower car or truck) like it used to. i am wondering if anyone has experinced this? and will going to 3.73 gears fix this? any advise will be appreciated.

3.73 will raise your rpm back up but not quite that of stock 3.55 and any higher will up rpm too much. Personally I'd do the gear change. Dunlaps?

bigger tires no downshifting

I have a 1997 reg cab 4.6l 4x4 off road pkg. When I bought it it had Cooper Discoverer STT 285/75/16 on it. I didn't have any problems shifting or anything. I do think that it hurt the MPGs pretty bad, I am only getting about 12. Took the Coopers off, sold them and put some less aggressive open country's on and I'll see how they work.

Ummm...no. I had smaller tires with 4.10s and my RPM were anything but too high:

So a search...4.10s on stockish-sized tires are a popular mod.

At any rate, I don't think his tires are that tall. A programmer can take care of your shifting.

The swap to 3.73 is a waste. You'll hardly notice a one-step ratio change...its only like a 5% difference.

4.10s would be a nice performance improvement with no MPG penalty (if dozens of others who have done this mode, including me, are to be trusted).

But I don't think a gear swap is needed if you're just wanting to get your shifting performance back, and are OK with the current performance of your truck.
