Do you have oil in the transfer case?

If yes, when was the last time you changed it?

I think I recall an issue with greasing the rear drive shaft slip yoke on the earlier 4x4's.

Depending on the noise I guess, there should be somewhat of a clunk, especially in 4l, clunks like hell.

Does it clunk only once when engaging 4x4 or does it do it all the time? Electric or Manual Shift on the fly t-case?

i have the electric shift and it does clunk a little bit when engaging but that is normal. They can be a little fussy at times but it shouldn't be that bad. I would have it checked out by a mechanic.

Do the 4x4 indicator lights come on in 4 wheel drive? Does it clunk in both 4Hi and 4Lo?
