06Crew want mpg-gear up &cpus

New 06 F150Crewcab 5.4L AODE/w 3.55's w/28"dia tire 2wheel drive
Getting 14.8-15.2mpg 60mph Grannydriving.
Used for urban driving no towing.

Thinking of going to 2.73,2.90s to get more MPG.
Being a OLD tech, worried about the computers going wacko from the ratio change.

What I'am I getting into.
Thanks
Walte

Give it a few thousand miles to break in, and MPG will increase. I wouldn't do gears, it will kill your overall around town performance. If you want gas mileage, sell your truck and get a car. It's a truck, not designed for mileage. Realistically you can expect about 16 - 17 mpg on the highway. A good way to get better MPG would be an intake, an exhaust, and a custom tune for the computer. Go to Troyer Performance and check out their stage 1 package.

Being a Redneck with the gunrack in the rearwindow, etc,etc..
A car is not a option, Sally Mae would disown me.

No thanks to headers that burn up plug wires, aftermarket intakes that leak, e-proms that burn up transmissions, or 96" Bozo tires & rims.

You gotta remember the AODE/W is

Goal is to run 70mph around 1600-1700 rpm. 16-17mpg
Currently with 3.55's it runs 60mph @ 1800-1900 14.5mpg

Not looking to run 8.90's in the quarter mile, or pull tree stumps out of the ground.
Dont even care if I get out run by a Pink 125cc Vespa scooter in a 1/8 mile.

Your truck DOES NOT have plug wires. Even if it did (like mine), they wouldn't be anywhere near the headers. If you buy a QUALITY intake, they will not leak and in most cases come with a lifetime warranty. And I've never heard of a transmission being burnt up from a tuner. I've got 20K so far on a tuner, with 111K on the transmission, do plenty of towing, and haven't missed anything yet.

AODE hasn't been used in several years.

Are you sure you have 3.55s? I'm at 2000 RPM at 74 mph (corrected) with oversized 265/75/16 tires

If you switch to your 2.90 gears (which I'm not even sure they make for our trucks), your in town performance would suffer, and any hill encountered on the highway would cause a downshift, losing even more gas mileage.

Why not upgrade to 18" tires off of a 4 X 4. I just did that on an 05 supercrew 2 wheel drive and it dropped my rpm to 1800 at 70 mph (checked with a gps). Before was running 2000 rpm at 70 mph (gps). Speedometer was showing 73 with the original 17" tires and now shows about 68 with the 18" tires. The original steel rims with tires weigh the same as the new 18" rim-tire combination.

Last tank full of gas I got a little over 18 mpg (mostly local driving), where before I was getting 15-16. But need to check it again. I also added an electric fan on this tank. Don't know which one made the most difference.
