Exclamation What's Wrong With My Rear End?

Ok I bought my truck almost a year ago with around 42,000 miles on it it and everything was just fine except for a clunking noise in the rear end. Whenever I would accelerate from a dead stop it would clunk. If I was driving along at any MPH and let off the gas then hit the gas again it would thump. I wasn't really concerned about this because most of my friends say that FORDs seem to clunk a little.

Now the truck has 53,000 miles on it and the clunk has turned into a THUMP it's getting really bad. And soemtimes at low speeds if I let off the gas it will clank multiple times like some loose gears or somthing.

I changed the oil in the rear end and the old oil was full of metal shavings. I havn't bothered to take the truck to a mechanic and have him remove the rear end cover and inspect it. But I am going to try to have that done next week.

I was wondering if you guys have any idea as to what might be wrong? I was thinking maybe the ring & pinion are worn out for some odd reason. But my friend says I will probably need to replace all the gears in the rear end. Heck I'm just confused

What usually goes bad in the rear end that would cause this?

Help me out guys!

I have the same problem with my truck, do you have a limited slip in yours, I do, the dealer replaced it under warrantry, but it didn't eliminate the problem, I have a feeling the U-Joints may have been screwed up by the dealer, if you find a solution to the problem, please post it.

No mine is not limited slip. And it's not pOsi-trac. Just a free wheel type setup. I have checked my U-Joints and they are perfect. It's all somewhere in the rear

it's the slip yoke.i had the same thing.they did $1500 to do the insides.the left the same gears.when i got it back after a month it did the samething.then they put a new slip yoke in it.the clunk is when you hit the gas, the end of the shaft goes in to the yoke.the yoke lines it up and keeps it from binding up.when it goes bad it binds up then it comes free, and clunks.after they did that it worked fine.had it for three months now.tell them to look at the yoke.good luck

Thumbs up

Kevin: Ok thanks! That could be the problem I will have them check that out. How much did it cost you for that? Or was it under warranty?

Thanks!

I have a similar thing happening. I have a clunk at coast down when the transmission down shifts from 3-2nd. I had the computer reprogrammed to change the shift points under a TSB and it seamed to help for a while but it is now back again. I think that I'll try to get the dealer to replace the slip yoke. What do you guys think?
