What is a "4x4 motor"?

Ford dealer said I needed a new "4x4 motor" to solve a grinding noise in the transfer case. Does anyone know what the "motor" is or does?

It's what shifts the TC so the front drive shaft gets power. Instead of a lever to do it, you have a switch on the dash and this motor does the work for you.

The dealer is not selling you a "muffler bearing", so take them for their word and have them fix it if that's the route you want to take....

Good luck!

Thanks Mitch.... Is motor vacuum controlled? Located under the dash or at the TC? It's been grinding intermitently for a while. I thought it was a solenoid.

As far as I know it's electric and it's mounted on the TC. Looks kinda like a mini starter motor. I'm not positive, but I think the low range selector is a separate one, and that might be what you see when you are looking at it from underneath??

Sorry I can't be any real help on it...... I just know it has a motor to engage 4wd and/or low range.

It is an electric motor located on the t/c. It controls any shifting of the transfer case, ie 2wd to hi to low.
