Question Engaging 4-wheel problem

Does anyone get a bang or a clunk when they engage the 4-wheel drive. I get it everytime I put it in, usually on the beach, I'm not sure if it's the way it is supposed to sound or if there is a problem. Thanks for any info...

I will get a clunk if I go to 4 high if I am on the throttle, sometimes if I am stopped in sand or something and I engage, it will usually go in fine, but there are times when it will clunk.
I had an 89 GMC 4x4 before this one, it had a very similar 4wd system to my F-150, and it would do the same thing.

The only noise I get from mine is the little click in the dash, sounds like a relay. I shift into 4wd high at near highway speeds.

Gino, you really shouldn't hear any clunks if you're stopped or moving on solid ground where the front and rear wheels are moving at the same speed.

What I'm not sure of is what happens if you're spinning your rear wheels and engage 4Hi. I'd imagine there would be some "grumbling" of the transfer case as it tries to synch up the front drive with the rear.

I never did this because I'm either stopped or already in 4Hi before I spin the rear wheels.

Gino, I assume you mean when you go to 4 wheel low? If it is an automatic, are you putting your tranny in neutral first?

Gino, for four wheel high I just let off the gas and pull the shifter back. There is no thump going in or out. Don't try with wheels spinning.

Cool

Gino, I'm with Dewayne. I just let off the gas a little and pull it back into 4 high. I never hear a noise or clunk going between 4 high and 2 wheel drive.

I have a '91 Explorer (waiting for a 150 Supercrew), that used to clunk when engaging 4x4. Dealer changed front U-joints and problem disappeared (of course, so did several hundred dollars).
