Post DIS-Engaging 4WD w/o 12v power

I'm new to elec. 4WD, SOTF type systems.
Qeustion/problem to solve: I'm out 4-wheel'n and I'm 4H or 4L. If, so some reason, I lose 12v power, does the system automatically unlock? What if the vehicle needs to be towed? Is there a manual way to dis-engage the system?
Dealer was no help, Ford on-line tech referred to to the dealer.
Anyone have ideas or know for sure what I could expect?

well... here goes

No it will not dis-engage if you where to lose 12v power. How ever these truck are to be towed on a flat -bed only they do say you can tow them very short distance at low speeds how ever ford does not recommend it. See your owners manual on towing. You would have to remove the auto- motor off the back of the transfer case and get something in there to turn the case back into 2wh.

What you asked is a what-if question, If you where to lose power you would be walking any ways do to the way the charging system is set up Ie altenator burns up the battery wil go dead fairly quickly and when the voltage goes beneath 9.5 volts the truck wil quit. Hope this help you, reason for flat bed towing is unless you remove drive shaft the rear plantateris are going and the pump which is run off the torque convertor which is hooked to the motor that is not running is not pumping lube to the bushing and the gears in the trans . End result one junk trans. No warranty if dealer finds out you towed in properly.. I know this because i used to work in a ford dealer rebuilding trans and heavy engine work. Hope this helps. I have broke parts before and i removed drive shaft before i towed it back home.. You will need a special socket to remove the drive shaft by the way. it is a 12 point 12 mm socket you could use a wrench also just takes longer. Good luck
