Question Best aftermarket gears?

Based on your experience, what's the best aftermarket gears out there for our trucks? I will be installing 4.88's to move 38's.

Thank you in advance for your replies.

I really like Ford Racing gearsets for Ford applications, but they may not make a 4.88 gear for your application. I've had good luck with the few Richmonds I've done.

That would be a good choice but, that's right they don't make that size. I will keep an eye on the Richmonds. Thank you.

I don't mean to hijack someone else's thread, but have a question...I have an '05 F150 5.4L with 3.55 gears. To me, this truck dogs big time. Do I need to change the rearend gears to like a 3.73 or higher to get better acceleration??? And what price range would I be looking at to do it. I would greatly appreciate any input

From what I understand, a programmer of some type from Troyer Performance nets the biggest bang for the buck in these trucks. I've got an '04 5.4 3V with 3.55s, and gears are really dead last on my list of things to do. A programmer, a cold air intake of some type and an exhaust are the big three for '04+ 5.4 3Vs, I think.

I've got Yukon 4.10's in my 2000 Expy 4x4. I tow and did not like the 3.31's that were in it. I like the Yukons but they are a tad bit loud.

Good luck on your gear swap.

shookman34,
As with all things, it depends...

3.55 to 3.73 will not be too noticable, don't bother with this swap. The ratios are too close to make a significant difference.

3.55 to 4.10 will be a huge difference, you're talking a 15% increase in torque multiplication. In this instance, much more noticeable than a programmer.

I run 4.10s with street tires. This, along with the blower, are the two things that I wish I had done from the beginning.

Thanks for the replys guys.....I have had a cat back dual exhaust put on with a Flowmaster FM 40 muffler with duals straight out the back. Sounded a bit better, but no noticible change in power. Today, my Airaid cold air intake arrived and I proceeded to promptly install it. I have actually noticed a pretty decent change in throttle response and acceleration.....nothing huge, but more than I had expected. The next mods I have in mind are a programmer and maybe electric fans. Way down the road, a supercharger setup is what I would really like to have on this truck

I was wondering the same thing with the 3.55 to 3.73 gear question and if is not worth the gain then forget it, I did do the troyer tune and it made a huge difference in my opinoin!

Thanks bigtruck311 for always being around. I am inclined to buy Genuine gears. I think that's what 4WPW sells. I am right? I have good experiences buying from them.

It will make a difference. Not as noticeable as going to 4.10s but you'll definitely notice it.

I put 4:88's in my 04 F150. I am running 35x12.5's with a 3 inch catback muffler,Airaid system all on a 6" Fabtech lift. I have a custon tune being done as we speak. I was going to go with 4:56's but I felt they wouldn't get the job done with the overdrive. I run 4:56's in my off road jeep witch runs 33 x12.5's.My truck is quick off the line and runs around 2100 rpm's at 60. It will also tow great when I put the jeep on the trailer to head out to play.
