what gears?

I have a 1999 F-150 XL with a 4.2 5-speed. (reg cab/reg box)

What gears do I have in my truck or how do I find out. Also, I would like the truck to get up an go a little faster off of the line, what gears would I switch too?

Thanks.

Whatever the truck has, you can install 4.10s and have a great tool for towing and performance. Plenty of top-end is left with the manual OD gearing. This will give your truck a whole new attitude.

Well actually it depends on what tires you run and what you want to do with the truck and where You drive it.

For example I run 305-70-16 tires and I live in Grand Lake CO (approx 7000ft asl) with 3:55 and 3:73 gears I never saw 5th or overdrive, and it was a dog off the line. However with 4:56gears I am able to pull my 5th wheel over a 10,000ft pass without a problem.

So lets put this in context:

What wheels and tires are you running.
What elevation are you at.
What do you want to do.
How much milage are you willing to give up to do that.

For a place to start you can always go HERE

I hope this helps
