Gear swap complete

I have my truck back from a 3.55 to a 4.56 (I have 315/75/16 tires)swap. I love it so far. I know I have to recalibrate my speedo. What do you guys suggest I do. I think I have to buy a tuner. If so, what kind should I be looking for and is a tuner easy enough to do myself (I really lack knowledge in all of this). Also, is there anything else I have to do to completely finish the whole gear change process. (I read somewhere about changing shift points). Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hello gata119,

What year is your truck? for the speedo, I think only 99 and on, can be changed with a tuner, 98 and earlier you need to replace some small plastic gear. I have a 2000 and recently put 33" tires on it, I got a Superchips max micro tuner to redo my tranny shift point and speedo and I was very impressed with how well it turned out.

With the 315s and 4.56 gears, how far off is your speedo? Does your gear ratio end up lower or higher than stock with that combo? I want to put 315/70 R17 on my 2000 F-150 Lariat 4x4. I'm trying to decide what to replace the stock 3.55 gears with to get the overall ratio back to stock. 4.30s? Thanks for any input.

4.30's in a 4x4? you might as well forget that. if i am not mistaken you have the 8.8 ifs just like my 2001. all you can get for that is 3.31, 3.55, 3.73, 4.10, and what i plan to eventually go with 4.56. This is the best I could find price wise for these gears as well. http://www.drivetrainsuperstores.com/default.asp

By the way gata119 did you have to buy the notched cross shaft for your rear diff or did you just modify the stock one. Had some other store I called and they said with 4.56's the notched cross shaft was not necessary to buy. they said just cut .040" off of it . Personally I would rather buy the new one that mess with the stock one. I could do it at work on one of our horizontal mills but i would be afraid of strength issues. I would not want to weaken it even if I am only taking off .040" In my line of work that is alot.
