Rear Bushing

Has anybody been able to R&R the rear housing bushing? I have the same problem as described. Do you have to buy the housing, or is a replacement bushing available?

TSB 01-9-3

I have also been dealing with this driveline vibration problem. I paid $126 for the extension housing. The bushing is not sold seperatley. I am on my second housing the first one did not fix the problem, however it did get better. Then I had the driveshaft balanced and the tech told me that it had a significant amount of run-out in the center. The problem did not get any better. Two nights ago I placed the rear on jack stands and removed the tires. I had a buddy take the vechicle up to 60 MPH where the vibration starts and you can actually see the driveshaft flexing in the center. During this process the vibration practically sheared the new extension housing off. Well, new housing installed today and revised shaft on order at $416.00. Has anyone heard of the new shaft actually fixing the problem?

Word to the wise, make sure you specify the size of the axle you have when ordering the new driveshaft. This information is found on an embosed tag on the differential housing. Second line and second set of digits.

Vibration

Here is what I have decided to do. After looking into it, and talking to a couple of people at Ford, I am replacing the rear housing, and the front yoke of the existing driveshaft, and having the driveshaft balanced by a driveline specialty company here in SoCal. My reasoning is that as the bushing hones out and allows play, the yoke wobbles and deteriorates internally. I understand the housing is 3rd revision, so it gets replaced. The bushing and seal for the existing housing are available here: http://www.bulkpart.com/ I'll r&r the old housing just in case.

Thanks for the bushing info CCRider!

Let us know how the repair works out. I will also let you know if replacing the entire drive shaft works. I purchased a drive shaft Saturday and it was for a 9.75 rear end so I can't use it and will have to return it. One of the things I noticed right away was that the revised shaft is not only larger in diameter but also much more heavier duty. This may be to prevent the shaft from flexing in the middle during high speed operation.

Anyway, I can't wait to find out as there seems to be alot of people out there with the same problem.

One more thing CCRider,

I am looking at the two extension housing shafts I have removed and the bushing looks like it is bonded in place with some type of adhesive.

Any noticable difference between the old and new housings? Any difference in the engagement into the housing of the new style shaft? I'm supposed to pick up my parts tomorrow......

Hey CCRider,

I am sure by now that you have your parts but just in case you don't. There is no noticeable difference in the extension housing other than the first time I replaced it the bushing was not worn like the original so there was significantly alot less play on the driveshaft .

Today, I installed the the upgraded driveshaft, part number F85Z-4602-BB, for an 8.8 inch differential, and I am so happy with the result I just cracked a cold one to celebrate! I am convinced that this is the fix. No more vibration and the best part is that anoying accentuated vibration when just letting off the gas and just re-applying is gone. Smooth as silk.

I am going to post a new message because I have searched the posts since the beginning and no one has said that they have applied the TSB fix and the problem was solved.

Hope this helps!
