Question squeaky rear end

I have about 75,000 miles on my truck. Over the last 2 to 3 weeks I have been getting a squeak in the rear of the truck that sounds like some jumping on an old set of bed springs when I back up. It stops when I go forward and doesn't make any sounds. I don't think it is the brakes because it is not a constant squeal or the suspension because it does it at very slow speeds on flat ground. I am beginning to think it is the rear diff but I don't know why it would only do it in reverse. Any ideas??

Question

Mine is doing the same thing. I think that it is either the u joint or the slip yoke. I haven't pinpointed it yet. I will let you know if I do.

Mine made a nasty squeal when it was cold. It turned out to be the pinion seal.

u jount

OOOOOHH!!!! I know this one! I just replaced mine a couple weeks ago. its your u- joint. ( the X looking thing at the back end of your driveshaft) it cost me about 40 bucks for the front and rear joints ( while yer down there) and the drive shaft is a cinch to take off. just take the four bolts off the rear w/ a 12 -point socket and slide the shaft out of the slip joint. then either use a u joint tool or a hammer and a vice to get them out. mine took a long time because i have a lot of wear on them (147,000 miles worth) but you shouldnt have a problem. when you order the joints, be sure to specify sealed or greaseable.

I figured I dig up this old thread instead of making a new one.

I have the same problem, it's very squeaky ONLY in reverse. So the general consensus is it's caused by the U joints?

mine is doing exactly the same thing going forwards (and no squeak in reverse)... took off my driveshaft and found a u-joint that i could hardly swivel at all by hand so i'm sure that is the culprit... but...

i got the replacement u-joints from Canadian "crappy" tire, and they are the wrong size so i left the old one in and oiled the s*** out of it and now it hardly squeaks at all.

now i will go to a more reputable parts store and get the proper parts i hope!
