Gears

Right now I have 285/75R16 on my truck, and I can't pull a boat out of the water. Is regearing the rear end something that would help that out?

Why can't you pull the boat out of the water? Tires spinning or the truck just doesn't have enough *****?

I think that regearing is something that everybody should look into. The benefits from it are amazing.

Or: buy a smaller boat.

There is no power there, and i burn the clutch. I have been told that the clutch is still ok. Also in four-wheel-drive there is no power either. I was on the beach, and went up a small sand pile and the truck bouged down. I put in the clutch, so the truck stoped. When i went to go again, the tires wouldnt move, and the clutch just spun.

My friend is having the same problem with a Nissan after putting bigger tires in it. Do you have a 4.2L?

There's obviously something wrong, and regearing could very well be solution. However, gears and labor can get pretty expensive, especially on a 4wd. You'd be looking at $1200 minimum. You can get it cheaper if you really shop around. I was able to find some really good deals on gears and had my truck regeared for $1050. But I spent a couple months looking for good deals.

If I were you, I would put a little money into diagnostics to figure out what the problem is before dumping a grand into gears.

No, I have the 4.6L. My little brother is real into cars, and is going to school for automotive, he has already regeared a couple trucks, so I really only need to buy the parts. Do you still think that I should do the diagnostics to it? What would be your recomendation for the new gears if that is what I do. I currently have 285/75R16 on it, and I would like to put 35's on it eventualy.

4.56 at minumum with 35's.

If your boat is heavy (tell us about your boat) then you should consider 4.88.

The boat is only a 19 foot fishing boat. It isn't huge by any means.

4.56 then, if it were a 2wd I would say 4.10's but with having 4wd and wanting 35's then go with 4.56 and you will notice a big difference.

I agree with 4.56s. If you do a lot of highway driving then you should wait until you are getting your 35s to regear. I have 4.56s and I ran my 33s (same size as your tires) for a few months until I needed new tires. It was great around town , but on the highway it really sucked up gas.

I do still think you should look more into the problem though. I have the same truck, engine, drivetrain (except I have an auto tranny) and (had) the same size tires as you, and I never had any problems like that. With my 33s and stock gears my truck was a dog, but in 4LO it still pulled pretty well.

But if you're going to 35s, you should definitely regear. Your truck won't move if you don't.

Agreed...your boat isn't that heavy, 4.56 will be good for 35s.

You don't need gears - all you need is to use 4LO. In 1st gear and 4LO, you can pull a house down without smoking the clutch.
