Post Gear Lube

Because of my trucks high mileage and a leaky pinion seal, I changed the lube in the rear diff. I used synthetic 80-90W. Afterwards I found out that 75-140W synthetic was recommended. No one carries that weight of lube in quarts (though I found a 5 gallon bucket for $137). So, I called the dealer. I was shocked by the price. It was over $20 a quart (3 required)! I don't pull to much heavy stuff so I'll wait a while to change to the heavier lube.

Bent6, I had done that to a couple of customer trucks with the Mobil 1 gear lube 80-90W and I had to end up paying dearly for it. It will turn the gears "yellow" and is not compatible at all and down the road will harm the gears. I had personally spoke to Mobil, Castrol, Penzoil and Texaco petroleum technicians about this situation and they all agree it is harmful to these new Ford rear ends, because the customers was hearing slight moans about one month after.
I had to ended up flushing out the axle and refilled with the 75-140 and let it run for 2 days and drain it out and refill again. This stopped the customers from filing a lawsuit and now I'm responsible for the axle problems if any comes up. Drain it as soon as possible and refill with the proper weight synthetic oil now.

Sorry, I looked at the wrong price.

The Series 2000 75w140 is $11.95 a quart. This it 100% synthetic. Still better than $20.

HI!... BENT 6 : When I had my 4.10 gears installed at my dealer I had them fill up my rearend with REDLINE synthetic gear oil. (PART # 58204) 4 liters cost me $59.57(CAN). I have had my gears and oil in now for about 5 months now with no problems or whining whats so ever. The mechanic that installed my gears even told me that I was smart to use REDLINE oil because it is the best. He also told me he used it in his truck as well.

Cool

Bent6 -

Ditto on the Redline - I just replaced my Diff Cover and filled it up with Redline 75-140. Price was $7.95/Qt from Summit Racing. Prior to this, I had bought some of that Mobil 80-90 stuff at AutoZone. When I arrived home and realized it was not the correct weight - I ordered the Redline.

This is interesting because I am looking at the owners manual and it has a Ford part# of XY-80W90-QL for the diff lube.

I think that is for the front. 75-140 is recommended for the rear.
