I have the same set up you have,no major problems at 70k miles. 58k miles was while towing a bass boat. just changed the lube every 30k and put in the limited slip additive with the new lube.

Those 8.8's are tough rearends.
89 Mustang 5.0, 3.08 LS, 130k miles, plenty of full throttle clutch drops, never any problems!
97 F-150 3.55 LS, 73k miles, plenty of ski boat towing, never any problems!

166,000 miles on my 8.8 and no problems. Changed the lube at 100k. Anyone know why Ford doesn't put the 8.8 in F150s anymore?

I do not know what Ford is using past 98, but mine has both front and rear 8.8.

Friends 97 with the 3.55 LS went out at 60K.
That is the only one that I have ever heard of. His dealer told him they never saw it before, and they would try to cover it under warrenty even with 60K on it...(that is one great dealer)

My 97 had 80K with no problems when I sold it.

Tenderpaw,
They still use the 8.8's with the 4.2L and 4.6L engines. The 5.4L gets the 9.25. I know it has been this way with 97-99 models. I think the 2000's also use this set up. The 4x4 uses the 8.8 up front also.

To mod or not to mod....that is the question!

My truck has about 60k on it right now, and they told me the same thing. That they have never seen it before. It is has cracks all around it and 2 really big chunks out of it, and I just took it in to get a new U-joint a month ago..I don't know if that has to do with anything or not but it didn't start messing up until I got it back. And my mustang runs great.

I wish ford would have never stopped using the 9 inch. I mean think about it ask any bracket racer what rearend they have in their car and they will tell you the Ford 9".
If not they have a Chrysler, any way I think the 8.8's (non LS) anyhow, stinks, my old 90 F-150 still running but barely. The diff housings are a little to soft for me. The shaft that goes through the spider gears was goulding the hole and making it really sloppy, but then again it did take alot of abuse so maybe they aren't all that bad.
Still wish they would bring back the 9" though, gear swapping would be easy! Comments on that one?
