Question Irritating squeak from rear wheel

I have a 4x2 98 Supercab with 83k showing and it has an irritating squeak from the the drivers side rear wheel.
I removed the brake drum and greased up where the brake shoes touch the back plate but no difference.
Do the rear wheel bearings run in the oil from the diff or do they need to be greased?
Anyone else had this problem?

The bearings are lubricated by the differential fluid. They may rumble if marred, but they won't squeak.

Could it be that you just have a bit of moisture on the shoes? My brakes will let out a little whimper on the first stop if they are wet.

Ya know, it could be a U-Joint.

ok, found it.
I did a search on the forums and came across a thread where HG found out that the noise was coming from the tailgate. WTF?

Anyhoo, went out and gave it a shake and sure enough, it squeaks.
The posts where it latches were slightly worn so I taped them up and gave everything a good old squirt of WD40.
Da daaaaa!, No more squeak.

I cannot believe how much that sounded like a wheel noise. It would start to squeak as soon as I started to reverse out of my driveway at about 2mph.
There I was, all ready to take the rear axle apart.

Thanks to AJ for the suggestion and to HG.
