upgrade 3.08 to ?????

I got a '97 F150 with the 8.8 and 3.08 gears. I was thinking about going to 3.73 or 4.10 for some get up and go. I have stock rims and tires. Can I just replace the ring and pinion or do I have get a complete rebuild kit? I do have 154k miles on it with no problems. Any suggestions?

It is always best to get a rebuild kit when doing the gear swap and since you plan on staying with your stock tires I do not think it would be a wise idea to go higher than the 3.73's but that is just my personal opinion. If you are going to do it then I would suggest that you go ahead and replace the axle bearing as well since it will be taken apart anyway get everything new in there that way you have no worries about a seal or bearing going bad soon after the swap and then having to pay the labor costs all over again.
