Talking two speed

Way way back when - we had a pick up that had a small flip lever on the floor gear shift ****. When you flip this lever up or down it would change the rear end to a different gear. This pick up had a two speed rear end. It was so great for towing heavy loads when in the low range. This truck had a three speed trans, and with the two speed rear end had six gears selections.

Does anyone know if anyone sells an aftermarked two speed rear end like this that I could purchase. I did see advertised somewhere a six speed transmission for F-150 that gave a super low gear for towing but I dont remember who had it.
Any answers.

Try Gear Vendors. Don't know if they've got a web site, but thet make 2 speed tailshaft units for auto trannys.

StrangeRanger - Thanks for the reply.
Will these work for a standard 5-speed?

My friend with the F-250LD 5.4 has the gear vendor and had the rear end changed to 4.10 also. He also installed BF Goodrich 245/75/16s which are a little taller than stock. He can cruise with no load at less rpm than I can. He uses a pedal on the floor like the old headlight dimmers to turn the gear vendor on and off. When he pulls his 27 foot travel trailer he uses the gear vendor. I have no idea about costs because he had the gear vendor from an old truck and the shop just added a new piece to mount to his F-250LD. He also had a new drive shaft made.

The electric two-speed axle to which you referred http://truck.eaton.com/na/spec_produ...speed_axle.htm are still available -- but on slightly larger trucks.

High-torque electronicly-controlled engines and 6-speed transmissions (known as 6+1) have replaced most 5-speed trannies with two-speed axles (known as 5+2).

You can find 'underdrive' gearboxes for insertion between your transmission and rear axle -- but they too are expensive.

I had hoped for years that a market for two-speed axle would develop -- so I could pop one under my (then) diesel Suburban, but there is really no market for them (think about it -- who needs lots of reduction AND highway speeds? Perhaps a farmer -- but they can live with what's available now. "Granny" gear and .7OD with a 4.56 will do it for most of those applications.

Edited to make the link work.
