Help me find this thumping....

First off, I'm not even to sure on where to post threads like this since I no longer own an F-150, so since there is no fourm for Explorers/Mountaineer's on here I post in GD.

This thumping noise has been around since I brought this Mountaineer used a few months ago. Its from the rear passenger side wheel. The slower you go down a bumpy road, the louder the thumps get and u don't hear it as bad at high speeds, BUT it goes away once you step on the brakes a little bit, but once the brakes let off, back to thumping.

You guys have any clue on what this might be since it does go away when I step on the brakes??

Thanks for any help u can give me on this!

Does it ever end???!!!

Jack that wheel off the ground and see if anything is loose. That would be a good starting point with your problem......you may surprise yourself and find it right away!

Please do this before we see the "my wheel fell off and rolled by me and hit the garage and now my vehicle leans to one side" thread.

I did take off the wheel this morning, but I have no idea on what I'm looking for. since it goes away when the brakes are on, thats what puzzles me? Something is tightning up when ever I hit the breaks which is stopping the thumping, but what is it though??

Tritoneer its got to be something loose. I would check lug nuts, shock bolts, suspension arms(you have independent rear suspension..lots of attachment points), rear caliper mounts etc. The noise goes away when you brake because your torqueing the suspension or brakes at that point. Good luck and for the love of God don't hit anything!

I'd have to say check the brake pads on that wheel to see if they are somehow being able to move around when the brakes aren't being applied. I've had this happen on a work truck with one of the front brakes...one of the metal clips that it snapped onto the caliper with had broke and every time I hit a bump it made a clunk.

Thanks for the help, but I don't even want to attempt to fix anything myself, you guys know how that goes I called a dealer now and made an appoinment for 9:45 monday morning. The guy that answered in the service area recognized my voice even before I said who I was! Thats pretty scary!

Hopfully it's nothing major and won't cost to much.

wow, good advice! I can see how that can be making this noise I hear! The bad part is though, I have no idea on how to work on a car or truck besides changing the oil and rotating tires and what so. Never did I change brake pads, so I'm not to sure on how to even attempt that, so to be on a safe side, I'm going to have a dealer look at it monday morning, but I will bring up the brake pad issue though with them to see if that may be the problem, so thanks for the info!

Could someone explain something to me? I've been reading posts by Mountaineer and everyone refers to him as Triton. Everyone ribs him and he doesn't even respond to it. Who is/was he and someone please let me in on the joke. Thanks.

Maybe the thumping you hear is the blood vessel in your head getting ready to pop because your hyper-paranoid about every squeek and rattle your vehicle makes. I bet you drive down the road thinking, "What was that? Did I just hear a squeek? Damnit! WTF was that! Am I hearing things? Or was it just a rock hitting the wheel well? Should I pull over on the side of the road and check to see what that was? OMG! I know I didn't just hear that! Stop playing with my mind! If there are any spirits that wish to communicate with me, please make your prescence known. I'm here to help you. I mean you no harm. SQUEEEEEEK! Holy shiat! Wait until I tell the guys at f150 Online about this!

The next day there is a post by mountaineer02v8 that is titled..."I have a squeek (maybe paranormal activity related).

J/k bud. Your a legend.
