Question Daytime running lights?

Anyone know how to turn off the DRL's on a 97? Need to have them off, they are shining in the windows in
the a.m. during warm-up and neighbors are being a pain about it. So I am not here to start a huge thread
on the pros and cons of the safety of them, just need to know how to turn them off...thanks...Caryl

I've heard there's a module behind the drivers headlight that you have to remove and replace with a "dummy" module. Just removeing it will cause some lights not to work.

Thumbs down

STOP "warming up" your truck. For better engine life, a modern engine only needs about 20 seconds of run-time before being driven. Letting it idle does nothing except waste fuel (and pollute the air).
The truck's working parts in the drive-line (transmission, differential, etc.) will only "warm up" with use. Just drive easy for the first mile or so.
You could also try backing into your parking space so the lights would not shine in your neighbor's window. You could offer to buy them a shade

Wink

I already offered to buy them a blind. Backing the truck in shines into the other neighbors house and they are no better about it.
I let the truck warm up (I live in New York) and it is cold now in the a.m. so I start it so I don't freeze half to death. I always have warmed up in the morning, I have to defrost and scrape the snow off the windows, see nothing wrong w/it and am not going to stop because people are whining about the lights!!! Thanks for the input though!

I don't think it is quite as simple as Tina stated. Check with your dealer. The control on mine is under the steering column. I don't know how to disconnect it, however.
If the neighbors whine, suggest they move to Canada - just as cold + ALL cars must have DRLs
Good luck.

Please don't send your neighbors to Canada, we already have enough whiners here.
gp9196,
Every time I apply my parking brake, the DRL's shut off until the brake is released. You may want to try this technique, at least you don't loose the use of the DRL's. However, back in May, something in the parking brake assembly broke, causing the DRL's to remain off pemanently. The dealer said it was a simple switch that needed replacing to correct the problem. I belive the switch is located just behind the parking brake assembly.

On my 99 truck I noticed that the DRL's are always on so lomg as the engine is running.
On my old 98 the parking brake would kill the DRL's, as Notro said.

ARe DRLs standard on the 1997s? I have an XLT I just bought last week. I have not noticed if I have DRL.
Thanks,
Ken

Mine didn't have DRLs. However, there's a sensor right in the middle of the dashboard, about 4-5" from the windshield. I covered the little cut-out in the dash so I would have atomatic DRLs. All that to say "Have you covered the sensor?"
Also, mine has a dial near the headlight switch, which sets the duration the lts remain on, once you shut the engine off. If you push that dial (thumbwheel) all the way down, so it clicks, that turns off the automatic lights.

Moveover. I think you're confusing DRLs with the autolamp system that's on Lariats. That little sensor detects a lack of sunlight and turns on the headlights.
DRLs normally can't be turned off from inside the cab and are one all the time.

I think I read on this board that DRLs were standard on Canandian trucks but not on trucks sold in the US.

If your 97 is like my 98 in the fuse block under the hood drivers side, you can remove the fuse,,it is the really small ones,,I found it in the owners manual. it was listed as day time runnig lights

If you turn on the parking lights (first position on the switch)the head lamps (DRL's) will not come on. Only the clearance or parking lamps will. The DRL's only come on when the lamp switch is in the "Off" position when the ignition key is turned on. This should not disturb the neighbors. Then as you pull out, return the lamp switch to off.
